Pressure Test
- Start engine and operate at idle for approximately 2 minutes. Record flow. If flow is less than 1.6 gals. (6.1L) per minute, pump may require repair. Continue test.
- Record pressure. If pressure is greater than 150 psi (11 kg/cm2 ), check lines for restrictions. Partially close valve to build up pressure to 740 psi (52 kg/cm2 ).
- Record flow. If flow is less than .9 gal. (3.4L) per minute, disassemble pump and replace cam pack. If pressure plates are cracked or worn, replace as necessary. Continue test.
- Completely close and then partially open gate valve 3 times. Do not close valve for more than 5 seconds. Record pressure reading when valve is closed. On B2300, B4000 and Navajo, minimum pressure should be 1050 psi (74 kg/cm2 ). Maximum pressure should be 1230 psi (86 kg/cm2 ). On B3000, minimum pressure should be 1300 psi (91 kg/cm2 ). Maximum pressure should be 1480 psi (104 kg/cm2 ). On all models, if pressure is greater than or less than specified, repair or replace flow control valve.
- Set engine speed at 1500 RPM. Record flow. If flow is greater than 2.6 gals. (9.8L) per minute, repair or replace flow control valve in pump.
- Turn steering wheel to left and right stops. Record pressure and flow while holding steering wheel against stops. DO NOT hold steering wheel against stops for more than 5 seconds. Pressure should be nearly the same as maximum pressure: 1230 psi (86 kg/cm2 ) on B2300, B4000 and Navajo, or 1480 psi (104 kg/cm2 ) on B3000. Flow should drop to less than .5 gal. (1.9L) per minute.
- If pressure and flow are not as specified, steering gear is leaking internally. Remove steering gear. Remove flow control valve. Repair or replace damaged parts. Check rack piston and valve seals for damage. Continue test.
- Turn steering wheel slightly in both directions and release quickly while watching pressure gauge. Needle should move from normal backpressure reading and snap back as wheel is released.
- If gauge needle reacts slowly, or sticks, rotary valve in steering gear or column is sticking. Remove steering gear and check for free rotation of column before disassembling steering gear. Repair or replace rotary valve.
- If system is severely contaminated, disassemble and clean both lines, control valve and pump. If problem still exists, check ball joints, linkage and other front suspension members.
