Ignition Timing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Mazda MX-3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Before adjusting ignition timing, warm engine to normal operating temperature. Turn off all accessories. Place transmission in Neutral (M/T) or Park (A/T). Ensure idle speed is correct. See IDLE SPEED  under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE. If ignition timing is not within specification, loosen distributor or crankshaft position sensor lock bolt. Rotate distributor or crankshaft position sensor until timing marks are aligned. Tighten lock bolt.
  1. Connect Diagnostic Tester (49-B019-9A0) to data link connector. Set SYSTEM SELECT to position 1 and TEST SWITCH to SELF-TEST, or connect jumper wire between data link connector terminals TEN and GND. See Fig 1 .
  2. Connect timing light to engine. Set timing to specification. See IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS  . See Fig 2 .

IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS (Degrees BTDC @ RPM)

Application M/T (1) A/T
MX-3 (2) 10 @ 700 10 @ 750
(1) Place automatic transmission in Park.
(2) Connect jumper wire between terminals TEN and GRD of data link connector.
