Vehicle Speed Sensor

WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article for 1995 models or see AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article for 1996 models. DO NOT  apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.
NOTE: If speedometer operates, vehicle speed sensor is okay.
  1. Remove instrument cluster. Connect ohmmeter across appropriate terminals of printed circuit connector and check continuity. See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION  . SeeFig 1 .
  2. Insert a screwdriver into speedometer cable receptacle and rotate receptacle. If continuity is not present 4 times per revolution, replace speedometer. If continuity is present 4 times per revolution, check wiring between instrument cluster and cruise control unit. Repair or replace as necessary.
