DTC 17: Engine Input Speed Signal (1996)
- Check for engine control system related DTCs. See appropriate article:
- TESTS W/CODES - 2.3L - 1996.
- TESTS W/CODES - 2.5L
- 1996.
If no DTCs are present, go to next step. If any DTCs are present, repair as necessary.
- Connect an oscilloscope between ground and terminal 1D at ABS/TCS control module connector. See Figure ABS/TCS control module is located behind left side of instrument panel. Start and allow engine to idle. Observe oscilloscope. Voltage should switch from a maximum of one volt to a minimum of 10 volts every 25-33 milliseconds. See Figure . If voltage is as specified, replace ABS/TCS control module. If voltage is not as specified, turn ignition off and go to next step.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect ABS/TCS control module connector. Reconnect negative battery cable. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between terminals 1D and 1B at ABS/TCS control module connector. If resistance is 7200-9300 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 7200-9300 ohms, replace ABS/TCS control module.
- Measure resistance between terminals 1D and 1A at ABS/TCS control module connector. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, replace ABS/TCS control module.
- Disconnect Engine Control Module (ECM) connector. ECM is located behind front of shifter console. Check for continuity between terminal 1D at ABS/TCS control module connector and terminal 1AJ (2.5L) or 2O (2.3L) at ECM connector. See Figure and Figure or Figure . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open circuit in wiring harness.
- Measure resistance between terminal 1AJ (2.5L) or 2O (2.3L) and terminal 3AB at ECM connector. If resistance is more than 1800 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 1800 ohms or less, check tachometer (engine speed input circuit) and related wiring harness. See INSTRUMENT PANEL article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT Section. Repair as necessary. On 2.3L also check engine speed input circuit to Transaxle Control Module (TCM). See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE P0725 diagnostic test in appropriate article:
- Measure resistance between terminal 1AJ (2.5L) or 2O (2.3L) and terminal 4A at ECM connector. If resistance is infinite, replace ECM. If resistance is not infinite, check tachometer (engine speed input circuit) and related wiring harness.
