Field Circuit Drain Test

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect voltmeter negative lead to generator rear housing (ground). Leave connected throughout this test. Connect voltmeter positive lead to terminal "F" screw. See Figure. If battery voltage exists, field circuit is okay. Further testing is not necessary. If less than battery voltage exists, disconnect regulator wiring harness connector.
  2. Connect voltmeter positive lead to terminal "I" of regulator wiring harness connector (with ignition off). If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in circuit "I".
  3. If voltage does not exist, reconnect wiring harness connector to regulator. Connect voltmeter positive lead to terminal "S" of regulator wiring harness connector (backprobe terminal). If voltage does not exist, replace regulator. If voltage exists, disconnect wiring harness connector from regulator.
  4. Connect voltmeter positive lead to terminal "S" of regulator wiring harness connector. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in wiring harness. If voltage does not exist, replace generator.
