ICM Manual Programming with As-Built Data

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda Tribute. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
  • This procedure should only be used if PCM data and ICM data is corrupted and not retrievable. Contact Mazda hotline and provide them with the VIN in order to receive the As-Built Data printout.
  1. Turn Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO) and record odometer mileage. Turn Key OFF.
  2. Replace ICM. Refer to CLUSTER LENS  .
  3. Remove PCM relay (labeled EEC MAIN ISO) from relay block in engine compartment.
  4. Connect NGS Tester and turn Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  5. Select model year. If the model year is not displayed, use 2001.
  6. Select correct Tribute model in Vehicle Selection (YF is for I4 and AJ is for V6).
  7. Select Diagnostic Data Link and press Trigger.
  8. Select ICM and press Trigger.
  9. Select Programmable Module Installation and press Trigger.
  10. Screen displays "Verify ignition is ON and press Trigger". Press Trigger.
    NOTE:
    • During this period, meter gauge needles will move to maximum reading for 2-3 seconds before returning to rest, odometer will display "d16A" 2-3 times before returning to normal state and chimes will sound.
  11. Screen displays "Determining ICM protocol" and then the Retrieve/Restore Module Configuration menu. Select Retrieve Backup Data and press Trigger.
  12. Screen displays warning "Enter Security Code". Enter "42 53" and press Store (#3 key).
    NOTE:
    • During this period, meter gauge needles will move to maximum reading for 2-3 seconds before returning to rest, odometer will display "d16A" 2-3 times before returning to normal state and chimes will sound.
  13. Screen displays "Finding VID block" followed by "Enter VIN". Enter 17 VIN characters using rotary knob to select the correct character and then pressing Trigger to enter the character. Press Store (#3 key) when finished to enter the entire VIN.
  14. Screen displays "Searching PCM for backup data" followed by "No backup data available from PCM". Screen the displays "Check workshop manual for as-built data support center. Cancel if not supported". Press Trigger.
  15. Screen displays "Call as-built data center to obtain ICM data". Press Trigger.
  16. Screen displays "Enter VIN". Correct VIN should already be displayed. Enter the VIN (if needed) using rotary knob to select the correct character and then pressing Trigger to enter the character. Press Store (#3 key) when finished to enter the entire VIN.
  17. Screen displays "Enter vehicle data below" and "FFFF FFFF FFFF". Enter Vehicle Data from As-Built Data printout (located in the top left corner under VIN) using rotary knob to select correct character and then pressing Trigger to enter the character. Press Store (#3 key) when finished to enter the entire Vehicle Data.
  18. Screen displays "Enter vehicle ICM data" and "60-01: FFFF FFFF FFFF". Enter ICM Data from As-Built Data printout (located on right side next to 60-01) using rotary knob to select correct character and then pressing Trigger to enter the character. Press Store (#3 key) when finished to enter the entire ICM Data.
  19. Screen displays "Does the as-built data list 60-2 data?" Press No (#8 key).
  20. Screen displays "Module data has been stored. Replace ICM". Select Restore Module Config <1> and press Trigger.
  21. Screen displays the Retrieve/Restore Module Configuration menu. Select Retrieve Module Configuration - New ECU and press Trigger.
  22. Screen displays "Unable to retrieve VIN from vehicle. Enter last 8 characters of VIN". Enter the last 8 characters of the VIN using rotary knob to select correct character and then pressing Trigger to enter the character. Press Store (#3 key) when finished to enter the entire VIN.
  23. Screen displays restoring Method 1 - configuration" followed by "Retrieving configuration data" and "Module download successful" when finished.
  24. Turn Key OFF and disconnect NGS Tester.
    NOTE:
    • Odometer cannot be changed. Install odometer sticker with correct mileage on driver's door jam at "A" pillar.
