Module Configuration

NOTE: Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has to be flash programmed using a flash cable. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
NOTE: Newly released modules will require configuration after being installed on vehicle. All configurable modules will be packaged in a kit which contains a warning label and multi-language sheet reemphasizing requirements to configure replacement modules. A New Generation Star (NGS) tester must be used to retrieve configuration data from old module before it is removed from vehicle. This information will be transferred into new module so that new module will contain same settings as old module. NGS tester will not retain stored configuration information for longer than 48 hours.
  1. During PMI the NGS tester will gather the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Once the VIN is retrieved, the NGS tester will carry out a self-test of the suspect module to determine is the module has been configured. The results of that self test can be as follows:
    • If DTC B2477 is retrieved, the present module does not contain complete configuration information. The PMI routine will halt and the NGS tester will give instructions on how to proceed.
    • If DTC B2477 is not present, the module will allow the NGS tester to retrieve its option content information. The NGS tester will then store the option content information along with the VIN.
  2. The NGS tester can store the combined content information and VIN for only one module at a time. Once information is stored, NGS tester can not be used to retrieve any other option content conformation without erasing the previous option content information.
  3. After the new module is installed, use NGS tester to restore option content information into new module. If a fault or concern occurs during PMI, perform prescribed action as specified by NGS message. See DIAGNOSTIC MESSAGE INDEX  table under MODULE COMMUNICATION MESSAGES.
