SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS

Condition Possible Cause Action
  • Shift Interlock System Does Not Release/Lock Properly.
  • Circuit(s).
  • Fuse(s).
  • Shift lock actuator.
  • Brake pedal position (BPP) switch.
See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS PINPOINT TEST 1: SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM DOES NOT RELEASE/LOCK PROPERLY .
  • Shift Control Is Out of Proper Gear Relationship.
  • Transmission shift cable and bracket.
  • Retainer bracket.
  • Shift control linkage.
See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS PINPOINT TEST 2: SHIFT CONTROL IS OUT OF PROPER GEAR RELATIONSHIP .
  • Transmission Range Indicator Does Not Correspond to the Gear.
  • Transmission shift cable bracket.
 
  • Transmission control indicator linkage.
 
  • Transmission shift cable loose from the transmission retainer bracket.
 
  • Shift linkage.
 
  • Clip securing the transmission shift cable to the shift control selector lever.
  • Install the clip properly.
  • Transmission Range Indicator Lamp Does Not Illuminate.
  • Bulb.
  • Circuit(s).

  • Transmission Control (OD ON/OFF) Switch (TCS) Inoperative.
  • Blown fuse.
  • Damaged TCS or TCS not cycled during self test.
  • Damaged powertrain control module.
  • Circuitry open/shorted.
See TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (TCS) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS PINPOINT TEST 3: THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (OVER-DRIVE OD, ON/OFF) IS NOT OPERATING PROPERLY .
  • Transmission Control (OD ON/OFF) Indicator Lamp (TCIL) Does Not Illuminate.
  • Burned out bulb.
  • Circuitry open/shorted.
  • Damaged powertrain control module.
