System Operation Check

- With ignition key removed, ensure gearshift lever cannot be moved from "P" position. Insert key into ignition switch.
- Turn ignition on. Ensure gearshift lever can only be moved with brake pedal depressed. Move gearshift lever to "R" position.
- Ensure ignition key cannot be removed. Move gearshift lever to "P" position. Ensure ignition key is removable.
- If shift interlock system does not operate as described, inspect suspect component. Repair as necessary. See COMPONENT TESTS . Check gearshift lever and control cable operation.
- Place gearshift lever in "P" position. On Miata, Millenia and Protege5 push down emergency override button on shifter console using a screwdriver, and verify gearshift lever can be moved from "P" position. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . On MPV, push down emergency override button on top of steering column cover. On all models, if gearshift lever cannot be moved from "P" position, replace shift lock actuator.
