System Operation Check

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mazda Protege5, 2002 Mazda Protege, 2002 Mazda Millenia, 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. With ignition key removed, ensure gearshift lever cannot be moved from "P" position. Insert key into ignition switch.
  2. Turn ignition on. Ensure gearshift lever can only be moved with brake pedal depressed. Move gearshift lever to "R" position.
  3. Ensure ignition key cannot be removed. Move gearshift lever to "P" position. Ensure ignition key is removable.
  4. If shift interlock system does not operate as described, inspect suspect component. Repair as necessary. See COMPONENT TESTS  . Check gearshift lever and control cable operation.
  5. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. On Miata, Millenia and Protege5 push down emergency override button on shifter console using a screwdriver, and verify gearshift lever can be moved from "P" position. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . On MPV, push down emergency override button on top of steering column cover. On all models, if gearshift lever cannot be moved from "P" position, replace shift lock actuator.
