Description & Operation: Introduction

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mazda Protege5, 2002 Mazda Protege, 2002 Mazda Millenia, 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Vehicles are equipped with a electronically controlled shift interlock system. Shift interlock system prevents gearshift lever from being moved from "P" position unless brake pedal is depressed. Key cannot be removed from ignition switch unless gearshift lever is in "P" position. In case of a malfunction, gearshift lever can be released by depressing shift interlock emergency override button located near gearshift lever. System consists of brakelight switch, shift lock actuator, park position switch and shift interlock override button. For Miata and Millenia models, see Fig 1 and Fig 2 . System is controlled by shift lock control unit incorporated in shift lock actuator.

NOTE: Shift interlock system component illustrations for MPV and Protege5 are not available from manufacturer.
