Keyless Entry System Preliminary Inspection

KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM PRELIMINARY INSPECTION PROCEDURE

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1
  • Is system an after-market one?
Yes Perform troubleshooting according to after-market keyless entry system manual.
No Go to next step.

  • Did customer activate keyless entry system when the ignition is switched OFF (LOCK)?
Yes Go to next step.
No
  • Explain to customer that system does not work when ignition is key in key cylinder.
  • Switch the ignition OFF (LOCK), then go to next step.

  • The keyless entry remote transmitter operation indicator light (LED) illuminates when any operation using the keyless entry remote transmitter is performed.
Yes Go to Step 8.
No Go to the next step.

  • Visually inspect the keyless entry remote transmitter battery for the following. (See KEYLESS ENTRY REMOTE TRANSMITTER DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY .)
    • Battery insertion direction (correct polarity)
    • Battery type (CR2025)
    • Corrosion, soiling, deformation of battery terminals (plus/minus terminals)
      • Contact malfunction between the battery terminal and battery when battery is inserted
  • Is there any malfunction.
Yes Battery insertion direction, battery type problem:
  • Properly install the battery or replace the battery with a specified one (CR2025), then go to the next step.

Malfunction with the battery terminals:
  • Clean corrosion and soiling or repair the terminal, then go to the next step.
No Go to Step 8.

  • Does the keyless entry system operate properly?
Yes Go to Step 9.
No Go to the next step.

NOTE:
  • Use a new monitor battery (normal battery) or one from another vehicle which operates normally.
  • Replace the battery in all the keyless entry remote transmitters with a monitor-use battery (normal battery). (See KEYLESS ENTRY REMOTE TRANSMITTER DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY .)
  • For each keyless entry remote transmitter verify that the keyless entry remote transmitter operation indicator light (LED) illuminates when a button is operated.
  • Does operation indicator light (LED) for each keyless entry remote transmitter operate?
Yes Go to the next step.
No If the operation indicator light (LED) does not illuminate, replace the keyless entry remote transmitter, then go to the Step 11.

NOTE:
  • Inspect for all keyless entry remote transmitters.
    • Inspect while the batteries for all of the keyless entry remote transmitters are replaced with monitor-use batteries. (normal battery)
  • Verify the operation of keyless entry system using all of the keyless entry remote transmitters.
  • Does the keyless entry system operate normally?
Yes Replace the battery, then go to Step 11.

No Go to next step.

  • Did the customer activate the transmitter within operative area (Within 2.5 m {8.2 ft} from area around vehicle)?
Yes Go to the next step.

No The system is normal.
Explain to the customer that the system does not work outside of the system operative area.

  • Did customer use keyless entry system in particular area, such as being near TV towers, power plants, power lines, or factories?
Yes Attempt to lock/unlock doors with keyless entry remote transmitter in non-interference area. If system operates:
  • Area of operation is bad. Explain effect of outside interference on keyless entry remote transmitter to customer.

If system does not operate:
  • Go to next step.
No Go to next step.

  • Are any of the following after-market electrical parts on the vehicle?
    • Cellular phone
    • Radio-wave equipment
    • Remote engine starter
      • TV, etc.
Yes Disconnect after-market electrical part connectors and attempt to lock/unlock doors with keyless entry remote transmitter. If system operates:
  • After-market electrical parts are interfering with keyless entry system.

If system does not operate:
  • Go to next step.
No Go to next step.
11 Yes Go to next step.
No
  • Go to Step 1 of NO. 1 ONE OR MORE ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTIONS INOPERATIVE.

  • Attempt to reprogram keyless entry remote transmitter ID code.
  • Can keyless entry remote transmitter ID code be reprogrammed?
Yes System is normal now.
No Go to Step 1 of troubleshooting NO. 3 KEYLESS ENTRY REMOTE TRANSMITTER ID CODE CANNOT BE REPROGRAMMED.
