Component Function: Actuator

The actuator receives its control signals from the control unit and actuates the regulating linkage by using a connecting rod. The actuator is comprised of an electric motor with gear unit, one-way clutch, potentiometer and a electromagnetic clutch. The actuator output shaft is driven by the electric motor, through a gear reduction and a one-way clutch.

The one-way clutch permits accelerator pedal use independent of the cruise control actuator. The potentiometer relays the position of output shaft to the control unit.

The electromagnetic clutch transmits power from the electric motor to the output shaft. The electromagnetic clutch interrupts shaft movement when the brake or clutch is depressed. Movement is also interrupted when the system is switched off at the control switch or when the regulating linkage is at idle speed position. See Fig 1 .
