SERVICE INFORMATION
The Value Commitment Program includes model year 1992 and early model year 1993 vehicles.
Since the introduction of the model 140 line, S-Class vehicles have undergone improvements and refinements. Customers will receive letters advising them that they will be contacted by their local authorized dealer to have these improvements and enhancements installed on their cars. In addition, Regional Personnel will assist you in our commitment to make this experience as satisfying as possible for the customer. Therefore, we urge you to follow the steps outlined in the Work Instructions and the attached packet of information.
Please pay particular attention to the special parts ordering procedures, which are intended to ensure that parts will be available as needed. It is important that these procedures be followed carefully, so that we may achieve our goal of customer satisfaction.
The attached Work Instructions (no. 284a) describe the items to be inspected, the models affected, respective operation code numbers with time allowances, and a list of part numbers required.
It is important to note that the vehicles must be carefully checked to determine if current production components such as hydraulic bushings, updated control modules, vanity mirrors, and outside rear view mirror fold back mechanisms may have already been installed on a previous occasion.
Submit claims using the special damage codes listed in the attached Work Instructions.
Vehicles with mileage exceeding 50,000 are entitled to program repairs. Please contact your regional office for an authorization code.
Finally, with the vehicle in the service area, this opportunity should be used to also repair any possible problems which are not covered by the Value Commitment Program, but are covered under warranty.
ASSOCIATED WARRANTY CLAIM SUBMISSION INFORMATION
A supply of "Quality Checked" stickers will be sent to each dealer. The sticker (Fig. Fig 17 ) should be affixed to all vehicles which have undergone the Model 140 Value Commitment Program. After completing the program, the service manager should sign and place the sticker on the module box cover in the component compartment. For those vehicles that have already undergone the program prior to availability of the sticker, place the sticker in the customer file so it can be affixed during the vehicle's next visit. The sticker should save time identifying cars which have already undergone the program and provide the customer with a visual confirmation. Additional stickers can be obtained, if needed, by contacting your Regional Coordinator.

- Remove front springs using spring compressor, special tool no. 000 589 46 31 00, and spring plates, special tool no. 140 589 07 63 00. Refer to SMS Job No. 32-200B.CAUTION: Observe all safety precautions when working with steel coil springs. Do not use impact wrench on spring compressor tool or bushing removal/installation tool.
- Remove eccentric bolts (19 and 20). Always use new nuts (19b and 20b) during reassembly. See Fig 5
.NOTE: The eccentric bolt nuts should only be retightened when the weight of the vehicle is resting on the front wheels.
- Tightening torque: 150 N.m.
- Pull the control arm free from the crossmember and hold it down with a spacer block made for this purpose (013, Fig. Fig 6 ).
- Drive the aluminum end washer from the rear rubber bushing with a suitable tool (Fig. Fig 7 ).

B. MODEL 140.042/051/057 (MODEL YEAR 1992 CALIFORNIA ONLY) DIAGNOSTIC MODULE, DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE 26
As of May 1992 production of models 140.042/051 and September 1992 production of model 140.057, a revised diagnostic module is installed in production to avoid unjustified setting of Diagnostic Trouble Code 26 (models 140.042/051/057) and 4/36 (model 140.057).
| Model | As of Chassis End Number |
|---|---|
| 140.042/051 | A-085552 |

On vehicles manufactured prior to production phase-in, check that vehicle has the proper diagnostic module installed as listed below. If not, install the latest diagnostic module according to list below.
C. MODEL 140.057 (MODEL YEAR 1992) LH-SFI CONTROL MODULE, DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES 19, 51
As of June 1992, revised air cleaners and/or LH-SFI control modules have been installed in production to avoid unjustified setting of Diagnostic Trouble Codes 19 or 51.
| Model | As of Chassis End Number |
|---|---|
| 140.057 | A-090745 |
On vehicles manufactured prior to production phase-in and those still equipped with LH-SFI control modules having the old part no. 012 545 63 32, use the HHT (Hand-Held Tester) to check the long-term adaption value for both LH-SFI control modules (see Hand-Held Tester Manual, Control Module Programming (Long-term Adaptation), page 23 [Editions 9/92 and 2/93]). No action is necessary on vehicles equipped with LH-SFI control modules having the part no. 014 545 19 32.
If value is 0.88 (lower part load) or higher on both LH-SFI control modules, no action is necessary. If value is below 0.88 (lower part load) on one or both, replace only the LH-SFI control module(s) with the low value. Replace with part no. 014 545 19 32.

| Model | As of Chassis End Number |
|---|---|
| 140 | A-083465 |
On vehicles manufactured prior to production phase-in, the new mirror drive should be installed unless the new mirror drive was already previously installed. Check the vehicle history to determine if the mirror assembly or the mirror drive motor were replaced after June 30, 1992. If so, do not continue. If these components were replaced on an earlier date or were never replaced, continue with the procedure.
- Using plastic wedge, press off cover. (1, Fig. Fig 13 ) and remove insulation.
- Disconnect electrical connector with green and yellow wires (arrows marked "C", Fig. Fig 13
).NOTE: To determine if a new mirror drive has already been installed in an earlier version mirror housing, check if pin 6 (green wire) and pin 7 (yellow wire) in the mirror drive connector (Fig. Fig 14 ) are silver colored instead of gold colored. The old version mirror drive had gold colored pins. If pins are silver colored, do not continue with disassembly. Reconnect connectors and install cover (1, Fig. Fig 13 ). If pins are gold, disconnect second electrical connector and continue with procedure.
