Task
- To generate injection pressure

Function
The fuel pump (13) delivers fuel to the suction gallery of the inline injection pump (10). On the pump plunger downstroke fuel flows from the suction gallery via the feed and control bore (10/15) into the pump barrel (10/8). Driven by the camshaft (10/7), the pump plunger (10/16) delivers the fuel via the pressure valve (16/3) and the injection line to the injector nozzle.
With its delivery stroke completed, the pump plunger (10/16) is pushed back to its starting position by the compression spring (10/13). The spring-loaded pressure valve (16/3) simultaneously shuts off fuel supply to the injection line.
The pump barrel (10/8) and the pump plunger (10/16) together constitute what is called the pump element.
