Function of inserting remote control key into electronic ignition switch - GF80.57-P-2001A

MODEL 202 as of 1.6.97, 208, 210.081 /281, 210 (except 210.081 /281) as of 1.3.97

When the key is inserted into the electronic ignition switch (EIS) control module (N73)  power is supplied inductively to the remote control key  by a coil in the EIS, so that the vehicle can be started even when the battery in the remote control key is run down. The buttons on the remote control key are inactive as long as it is inserted into the EIS.

Mutual infrared communication is accomplished between the remote control key and EIS. The remote control key identifies itself to the EIS. After checking, this identification is passed on to the electric steering column (ESC) control module (N26/5)  . After checking the identification the ESC unlocks the steering and then releases the EIS to turn the key  .
