All of the doors, the trunk and the tank flap can be locked and unlocked centrally with the infrared remote control.
The infrared remote control receiver unit IRCL (A26/7) is located on the interior rearview mirror.
Point transmitter output on remote control and IRCL receiver unit in interior rearview mirror (A26/7)
and press transmit button. When the vehicle is locked the red indicator lamps flash, when the vehicle is unlocked the green indicator lamps flash in the infrared remote control receiver unit (IRCL) in the interior rearview mirror (A26/7) and in the door handle (E34 for LHS or E34/1 for RHS).E34 or E34/1 not with I H. Remote control is possible up to a distance of approx. 6 m when the remote control batteries are completely charged.
If the red and green indicator lights in the infrared remote control receiver unit (IRCL) in the interior rearview mirror (A26/7) and driver's door handle (E34 for LHS or E34/1 for RHS) flash simultaneously when the vehicle is locked and unlocked for approx. 30s, replace the batteries in the remote control as quickly as possible.E34 or E34/1 not with
.
Closing side windows and sliding/pop-up roof
After locking continue to hold down transmit button. After approx. two seconds the side windows and sliding/pop-up roof start to close. For this function the remote control range is lower than for locking and unlocking for safety reasons.
The batteries can also be checked:
Hold transmit button down longer than one second, the battery indicator light in the transmitter output comes on momentarily if the batteries are okay.
if the indicator light does not come on momentarily, change the batteries.
Watch vehicle during closing operation to ensure that no one is injured by pinching.
In the event of a hazard release the transmit button - the closing operation is interrupted immediately.
Press transmit button again and hold down - the side windows and sliding/pop-up roof open again.
The sliding/pop-up roof opens again only when it was not yet completely closed.
The central locking (CL), convenience feature (CF), anti-theft alarm (ATA) as well as trunk lid remote control (TRC) can be operated with the infrared remote control for central locking (IRCL) via the infrared remote control (IRCL) interior rearview mirror receiver unit (A26/7).
Moreover, the infrared remote control (IRCL) control module (N54) affects the engine control module for realization of the drive authorization system.
There are two versions of the infrared remote control (IRCL) control module (N54):
- CAN version (controller area network)
- PWF version (pulse width modulation)
| Connection, IRCL control module/engine control module | Engine control | Connection between IRCL control module / engine control module | Engine control |

| CAN | EIFI (diesel) | ||
| CAN | ME (gasoline) |
The engine control can be disabled and/or the fuel supply cut off by the infrared remote control module (IRCL) (N54). The IRCL control module (N54) is connected to the engine control module via the CAN bus or a PWM link. After disabling the engine control (vehicle locked with IRCL), the engine control module disable the injection system.
The drive authorization system can only be activated and deactivated with the IRCL. Locking and unlocking the vehicle with the mechanical key has no effect on the drive authorization system. The ATA remains active when the vehicle is locked with the IRCL. (Only

with key)
If the engine does not start when cranked and the red and green indicator lamps in the interior rearview mirror flash alternately for approx. 30 s, lock and unlock the vehicle again with the remote control.
The infrared remote control module (IRCL) (N54) and engine control module are permanently assigned to one another by an identification code. This identification code can not be deleted. This means that it is not possible to replace the infrared remote control module (IRCL) (N54) or the engine control module with the components from another vehicle for testing.
Function
The infrared remote control can only be operated with the remote control for the specific vehicle, because the remote control and the infrared remote control module (IRCL) (N54) installed in the vehicle are matched to one another.
The remote control transmits the signal to the infrared remote control receiver (IRCL) in the interior rearview mirror (A26/7) in the form of an infrared light beam. The IRCL receiver module (A26/7) receives the light beam, filters out extraneous light, amplifies the signal and relays it to the infrared remote control module (IRCL) (N54) via a control line.
The transmit signal consists of a fixed code, which is also coded by a processor. This additional coding changes each time the remote control is actuated. This makes it impossible to decode the signal. The infrared remote control module (IRCL) (N54) decodes the signal and, if the fixed code is correct, actuates the central locking system. Simultaneously the control module resets itself to the next signal and inhibits the previous signal.
If the remote control is actuated outside of the reception range, the current signal changes in the remote control, however not in the infrared remote control module (IRCL) (N54) in the vehicle. When the remote control is used again within the reception range, the signal from the remote control no longer coincides with the signal expected by the control module. However, since the control module can calculate the next 250 expected codes, it can reset itself to the current signal. If the remote control has been actuated more than 250 times outside of the reception range, it is necessary to resynchronize the remote control.
Synchronizing locking system
If the vehicle cannot be locked or unlocked, it is necessary to synchronize the system.
For this purpose point the remote control at the infrared remote control receiver unit (IRCL) (A26/7) in the interior rearview mirror and press the transmit button momentarily twice.
Switch on the ignition within 30 s.
The locking system is then ready for operation again.
Desynchronization
If the remote control key is lost the infrared remote control module (IRLC)(N54) can be desynchronized (alternating code reset).
This means that it is only necessary to replace the mechanical lock system when a remote control key is lost.
Desynchronization is possible with the hand-held tester (HHT).
The desynchronization operation for the IRCL control module is menu-guided.
After desynchronization it is necessary to resynchronize all other remote control keys still present.
(See Diagnosis Manual, Body, Volume 1, Index 4.5).
Version coding is menu-guided.
Universal infrared remote control modules (IRCL) (N54) with part no. 210 820 27 26 and 210 820 28 26 replace IRCL control modules (N54) with part no. 210 820 21 26 and 210 820 22 26.
Coding possibilities:
- Vehicle model
- Convenience feature (CF)
- Trunk lid remote control (TRC)
- Lock switch check (
,
)
The remote control keys for infrared central locking have a number on the inside (battery compartment).
Up to 8 remote control keys matching the lock system can be recognized and checked for authorization with the hand-held tester. Moreover, the condition of the battery as well as synchronization of the individual remote control keys can be checked. In addition the HHT indicates the number of the current remote control key (key last used). Moreover, it is indicated whether the infrared remote control module (IRCL) (N54) is permanently assigned to the vehicle. This check of the actual values is menu-guided.
Remote control keys can be irrevocably disabled with the hand-held tester . Disabling of certain remote control keys is menu-guided. Irrevocable disabling of a certain remote control key should be performed only at the express desire of the customer when a remote control key has been lost
The spare infrared key (2) is the size of a credit card. The central locking system as well as ATA can be actuated with the spare key Moreover, the drive authorization system can be activated and deactivated with the infrared remote control signal. Actuation of the convenience feature is not possible. An infrared transmitter, a pushbutton (b) for actuation, an LED (a) for the checking the battery, a battery compartment with two batteries and a mechanical main key (d) are incorporated into the spare key (2).The infrared beam is emitted in the middle of the front of the spare key when the pushbutton key is pressed.
If required the mechanical main key (d) can be replaced with a mechanical auxiliary key. This can be obtained from ZVL Germersheim. With the mechanical auxiliary key it is not possible to unlock the lock cylinders in the trunk lid and glove compartment. The customer therefore still has the familiar advantages at a hotel or workshop.
Spare keys can be marked with a number embossed on the rear (here 3).
To change the two batteries (f) remove the battery compartment cover (c) on the spare key (2). For this purpose press in the retainer (arrow). Use the same batteries as in the normal infrared remote control key.
