25/97-1 RECALLS AND SERVICE CAMPAIGNS: WHEN REPAIRING ANY CAR, ALWAYS CHECK THE VEHICLE MASTER INQUIRY FOR OPEN CAMPAIGNS.

25/97-3 GROUP 54 - VERSION CODING FOR "LIM" SYSTEM: All MY 98 vehicles have a new designation in the instrument cluster called a "LIM" field. The only exceptions are the R129 which has no "LIM" field, and R170 which did not incorporate the "LIM" field until approximately 6/97 production. This is a designation for a speed limiting system which will not be made available for the U.S. market. However, instrument clusters on U.S. production vehicles already have the designation for "LIM" for MY98. Beginning with MY99, this field will be screened out on the instrument cluster and will no longer be visible. The "LIM" field is a rectangular box located just above the odometer and trip meter. The "LIM" field is most visible in the R170 due to the light-colored background of the instrument cluster. This field should not normally (for the U.S. market) ever be illuminated. However, if the version coding on the instrument cluster has been set to "display variable speed limiter", then the bulb for the LIM field will illuminate when the key is first turned to position 2, during the bulb check. When performing the PDI on MY98 vehicles equipped with the "LIM" field, please verify that the "LIM" field does not illuminate during the bulb check. If it does, connect the HHT and deactivate the illumination function in the instrument cluster version coding as follows:

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER VERSION CODING:

After changing coding, please verify that the bulb no longer illuminates with the ignition key in position 2. The version coding procedure, if necessary, is considered part of the PDI. No additional labor time will be paid.
