SERVICE INFORMATION

12M/98-1 RECALLS AND SERVICE CAMPAIGNS: WHEN REPAIRING ANY VEHICLE, ALWAYS CHECK THE VEHICLE MASTER INQUIRY FOR OPEN CAMPAIGNS

12M/98-2 GROUP 07 - ML320, FROM CHASSIS END NO. A000003 TO A030179: ** This topic replaces MB-Net Message No. 174 dated April 8, 1998 *** The software in the engine control module can trigger an erroneous Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) pointing to a properly functioning EVAP component. This results in Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination.

During the next service visit, the Engine Control Module (ME-SFI) for these vehicles should be checked for OBD codes and your Regional office should be notified. The Region will then inform you of one of the following procedures to follow.

  1. A Technical Specialist will coordinate with the dealer the installation of changed software into the affected vehicle(s) at the dealership.
  2. The Region can supply a reprogrammed (non married) Engine Control Module (ME-SFI) for installation in the affected vehicle. The removed unit must be sent via Federal Express Standard Overnight Collect, Account 112835962 for reprogramming to: MBUSI, One Mercedes Drive, Door E1.2, Attention: John Catall, Technical Service, Vance, Alabama 35490-9310. Failure to return the removed unit to MBUSI will result in a charge back to the dealer.
  3. The Engine Control Module (ME-SFI) from the affected vehicle can be sent to the Region via Federal Express Standard Overnight Collect, Account 112835962. The Region will update the unit for reinstallation into the same vehicle and return to the dealer via Federal Express Prepaid. The updated Engine Control Module from the Region is not divorced and thus is STILL married to the vehicle and will NOT function with any other vehicle. We request that the Regional Offices and dealerships keep record of the updated vehicles.
NOTE: The modified software can be identified by the software date as follows:

ECU part no. 020 545 05 32 = sw 9/98 and higher

ECU part no. 023 545 97 32 = sw 8/98 and higher

The software date can be read out with the HHT. Vehicles with the above software dates and higher do not need to be modified.

Warranty information for procedures 2) and 3) only.
