Replacing Rear SAM and Version Coding for Fuel Sending Units

SERVICE INFORMATION

On vehicles produced up to September 28, 2001, a thick film fuel sending unit (FSU) was used which can be identified by a 4-pin connector. On vehicles as of September 29, 2001, the new Magnetic Passive Position Sensor (MAPPS) fuel sending unit (FSU) is used which can be identified by a 5-pin connector.

The previous rear SAM, part no. 203 545 07 01, can only be used with the thick film FSU and not with the MAPPS FSU. The current rear SAM, part no. 003 545 52 01, comes from the factory coded for use with the new MAPPS FSU. This SAM can be reconfigured for the thick film FSU by following the below steps using SDS version 01.02 or newer.

  1. Select the correct model.
  2. Select Control Units.
  3. Select Body.
  4. Select REAR SAM - rear signal acquisition and actuation module.
  5. Select Control unit adaptations.
  6. Select Read coding and change if necessary.
  7. Select Fuel tank sensor.
  8. New fuel tank sensor (MAPPS) will be displayed.
  9. Change this to Old fuel tank sensor ( ).
  10. Hit F3 to change coding.
  11. End DAS.

The instrument cluster also needs to be correctly version coded for the installed FSUs. If not correct either an incorrect fuel level or empty will be displayed. To check the FSU coding in the instrument cluster, follow this procedure.

  1. Select the correct model.
  2. Select Control units.
  3. Select Information and communication.
  4. Select ICM - instrument cluster with maintenance interval display.
  5. Select Control unit adaptations.
  6. Select Version coding.
  7. Select Fuel tank sensor.
  8. Choose either MAPPS for MAPPS fsu or Dickschicht for thick film fsu.
  9. Hit F3 to select the displayed version code.
  10. Exit DAS.
