Overheating & Pinging Protection

If engine is operating at an excessively high engine temperature, ignition timing is retarded to protect engine. Pinging protection is activated if engine coolant temperature is approximately 212°F (100°C) with engine under full load. Ignition timing adjustment begins when engine coolant temperature reaches 212°F (100°C) and reaches its maximum adjustment potential when engine coolant temperature reaches 248°F (120°C). An example of ignition timing control is:

The ME-SFI control module will also adjust ignition timing if high engine coolant temperature is coupled with high intake air temperature (i.e. 122°F (50°C). ME-SFI control module will add pinging protection and intake air temperature ignition adjustment for a maximum ignition timing retard of 11 degrees.
