MODEL 463.247 /248 /254 /270 /303 /340 /341 up to 31.8.08 with CODE (ET4) COMAND operating and display system as of model year 2007 model year 07.5, YoM 07

MODEL 463.249 /271 up to 31.8.08 as of model year 2007

Function requirements

General

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit is the central control for the entertainment and communication systems.

A display that is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit provides the user with information on all the functions available in the communication and entertainment systems. The user can use the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to operate several systems and all influence the driver information system functions.

The following applications are shown at the same time in the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1):

IMPORTANT For model 463.249/271 the display of the audio, telephone and navigation data in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster is not available until 1.6.07.

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit communicates with the following control units over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST):

In the gateway function the COMAND operating, display and controller unit routes the signals from the interior CAN to the MOST components thus forming the communications interface.

Operating instructions

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit is operated using the:

IMPORTANT With model 463.249/271 it is only possible to operate audio, telephone and navigation components via the multifunction steering wheel button groups as of model year 07.5, YoM 07.

Inserting the transmitter key (A8/1) into the electronic ignition switch control unit (N73) (circuit 15C ON) activates the interior CAN to ensure that the switch-on procedure is quicker. In position 1 (circuit 15R On) the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is switched on, provided that this was switched on before the transmitter key was last removed. The system that was active before the key was last removed (e.g. radio) is switched on and the corresponding main menu is displayed. If the COMAND operating, display and controller unit was switched off for more than t = 30 min, then a warning message appears at first with general information about how to use the system.

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit can also be switched on when the transmitter key is removed by pressing the "ON" button. All functions are then available for t = 30 minutes After this the COMAND operating, display and controller unit switches off automatically.

IMPORTANT It is not possible to operate it using the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group.

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit is switched off when the transmitter key is removed (circuit 15C OFF). The run-on time of t = 30 min (standby) of the navigation system starts. During the run-on time, all the important localizing parameters remain stored. The run-on time for the audio systems can be configured to suit; this is done during the installation of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit in the plant. The COMAND operating, display and controller unit which is not switched on is always in "standby" mode when the interior CAN is active.

When the battery (G1) voltage is low a message appears in the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit asking that the engine be switched on.

If the engine is not started, another warning is issued after t = 3 min stating that only t = 10 s remain for switching on the engine before the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is shut off.

IMPORTANT If the system has shut off and the on-board power supply rises again, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit does not switch itself on again automatically. The system can be switched on again manually.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is actuated by the electronic ignition switch control unit via the diagnostic CAN to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

This interface is used to diagnose all the other control units in the MOST. This means that the COMAND operating, display and controller unit forms a diagnosis gateway.

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit encompasses the following component functions:

IMPORTANT The telephone mode functionality is described in the separate function description for the "Mobile telephone system function".
