CHECK TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE AND UPDATE IF NECESSARY (722.9 TRANSMISSION); UPDATE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE AS REQUIRED (M273 ENGINE)

This Service Campaign has been initiated because DCAG has determined that on affected vehicles (see VIN range below) the software for the transmission control module may need to be updated to adjust the lock up force of the torque converter. The engine control module software will also be updated. Dealers will update the transmission control module software and the engine control module software as required.

Please review the Effective Serial Number chart located below, and if necessary, repair the subject vehicles during the vehicle's next service.

Prior to performing this Service Campaign:

Please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been previously repaired.
Please review the entire Service Campaign bulletin.

Approximately 27,691 vehicles are affected.

NOTE: Every vehicle in the VIN range may not be included in the campaign. VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. VMI always overrides the bulletin in reference to a specific vehicle's inclusion in a particular campaign. Please also note that Recall and Service Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

PROCEDURE

Note - Prior to starting the procedure ensure to:

Use DAS version 10/2006 or higher with all associated patches
Follow the steps exactly as described in DAS
Connect battery charger

Connect Star Diagnosis.
Install transmission control module software.
- Follow the DAS path "Control unit adaptations/ Control unit programming" and on-screen instructions.
- If no newer software is found: Disconnect Star Diagnosis; this campaign has been completed .
Perform SCN coding of transmission control module.
- Follow the DAS path "Version coding" and on-screen instructions.
Vehicles with engine M273 only: Install and code engine control module software.
- Install: Follow the DAS path "Control unit adaptations/ Control unit programming" and on-screen instructions.
- SCN coding: Follow the DAS path "Version coding" and on-screen instructions.
  NOTE: SCN coding must be performed even if the "No newer control module software was found" message appears when attempting to flash the engine control module.
Erase all fault codes and event memory.
All vehicles except Models 164.122 and 164.822 up to, and including, VIN A067677:
Perform transmission adaptation up to fourth gear.
- Follow the DAS path "Adaptations" and on-screen instructions.
- Select transmission mode "S".
- Select adaptation 1-2 gear in DAS; enter first gear manually and accelerate vehicle slightly, then manually up-shift according to on-screen instructions; repeat scenario for adaptations 2-3 and 3-4.
  NOTE: Let vehicle coast down after each shift.
- Perform the adaptations 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 gear twice .
Disconnect Star Diagnosis.

NOTE: The following allowable labor operation should be used when submitting a warranty claim for this repair:
