Power transmission, general

The term "power flow" refers to the transmission paths of driving power and engine torques. The engine torques are transmitted to the drive wheels via the mechanical/hydraulic connection of the engine, torque converter, the downstream automatic transmission and the differential

Power is transferred in the torque converter via the driven impeller by diverting hydraulic fluid to the turbine wheel, which is connected to the transmission input shaft.

If the torque converter lockup clutch is engaged, the power flows via this mechanical connection to the transmission input shaft. The gears of the individual planetary gear sets are used to forward the torque developed by the torque converter to the transmission output shaft, depending on the gear ratios and actuated shift elements, with the aid of multidisk clutches, multidisk brakes and overrunning clutches.

A reduction of the output speed in the low gears provides lower vehicle speeds with high tractive forces and drive torques at the drive wheels.
