General
The engine start/stop system (MSS) serves to achieve automatic cutting out and subsequently automatic starting of the engine to reduce fuel consumption or protect the environment if the vehicle is driven in city traffic or distribution haulage.
The MSS system is implemented in the CDI control unit.. The MSS system is started automatically after every engine start and subsequently activated after exceeding the minimum speed of 2 km/h. Activation of the MSS system is indicated over the LED in the ECO button and display of the symbol "ECO" in the IC. The activated MSS system is switched off by actuating the ECO button, which is in the UCP control unit, or by switching off the ignition (status "circuit 15 OFF") and the LED in the ECO button goes out.
The deactivated MSS system is switched on again, for a switched on ignition (status "circuit 15 ON"), through repeated actuation of the ECO button and the LED in the ECO button lights up.
Function sequence for engine stop function
The MSS system switches off the engine automatically if the following function requirements are fulfilled by associated components for at least 2 seconds:
- Engine runs at idle speed, from the crankshaft position sensor, over a direct line
- Vehicle stationary, from ESP control unit®, via the engine CAN
- Transmission in idle or neutral, from electronic selector lever module control unit, via engine CAN
- Coolant temperature > 15°C, from coolant temperature sensor, over a direct line
- Outside temperature > 0°C, from the outside temperature sensor, over the SAM control unit, interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit (EZS), via the engine CAN
- The charge level of the on-board electrical system battery (G1) is adequate, from Battery sensor over the SAM control unit, interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit (EZS), via the engine CAN
If the engine was switched off automatically by the MSS system then also the corresponding settings of the "SPEEDTRONIC", with code (MS1) Cruise control, are switched off. After automatic starting of the engine by the MSS system the settings for the "SPEEDTRONIC" must be taken up again.
Start Engine function
The MSS system starts the automatically switched off engine again if the following conditions apply for the associated components:
- Transmission in idle or neutral, from electronic selector lever module control unit, via engine CAN
- Brake pedal not actuated, from the brake lights switch over ESP control unit®, via the engine CAN
If a gear range "D" was selected after the MSS system automatically switched of the engine then the brake pedal is pushed down all the way during automatic starting of the engine by the MSS system. The information concerning release of the brake pedal is read in directly from the ESP control unit® and transmitted via the engine CAN to the CDI control unit.
