Principle of power flow in 5th gear

Via the drive shaft (1) and involving all 3 planetary gear sets, the torque coming from the torque converter is reduced and transmitted to the output shaft (5).

The following are not engaged:

Front planetary gear set

The input shaft (1) drives the ring gear (29/4). In drive mode, the sun gear (29/1) is supported at the housing via the locked overrunning clutch F1 (27) and, in overrun mode, via the engaged multidisk brake B1 (21). The planetary gears (29/2) roll on the fixed sun gear (29/1) and take care of a torque increase from the ring gear (29/4) to the planet carrier (29/3). The planet carrier (29/3) moves at reduced speed in the direction of engine rotation.

Rear planetary gear set

The multidisk clutch K2 (25) is engaged and transmits the input rotational speed of the drive shaft (1) to the planet carrier (31/3) via the ring gear (31/4). The ring gear (31/4) rotates at reduced speed due to the mechanical connection to the planet carrier (29/3). The planet gears (31/2) turn between the ring gear (31/4) and the sun gear (31/1). The sun gear (31/1) moves at an increased speed in the running direction of the engine.

Center planetary gear set

The ring gear (30/4) turns at the input rotational speed due to the engaged multidisk clutch K2 (25). The multidisk clutch K3 (26) transmits an increased speed to the sun gear (30/1) due to the connection to the sun gear (31/1). The planet gears (30/2) turn between the ring gear (30/4) and the sun gear (30/1). The planet carrier (30/3) and the output shaft connected to it (5) have a speed between the ring gear (30/4) and sun gear (30/1). This provides a step-up ratio.
