- Vehicle dynamics CAN (CAN H)
- Sensor CAN (CAN S)
Low voltage differential signaling line (for code 238 (Active Lane Keeping Assist))
The video and radar sensor system control unit receives image data from the multifunction camera (A40/11) via an LVDS line.
Chassis CAN (up to 28.02.2013) or chassis CAN 1 (as of 01.03.2013)
As an example the video and radar sensor system control unit reads in the following information via the chassis CAN or chassis CAN 1:
- Operating condition for engine/drivetrain
- Gear range engaged
- Parking brake status
- Engine drive torque
- Braking torque
- Acceleration/yaw rate
- Driver request via the cruise control lever
- Driver request to overtake (setting the turn signal)
- Driver request via menu settings in the IC
- Vehicle speed/acceleration
- Global Positioning System (GPS) signals
- Steering wheel angle
- Object recognition short range (short range radar)
- Object recognition long range (long range radar)
- Accelerator pedal position
- Brake pedal position
- Lane data (with CODE 238 (Active Lane Keeping Assist))
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Vehicle dynamics CAN
The video and radar sensor system control unit reads in the following signals from the DISTRONIC electric controller unit (A89) (for code 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS) or code 237 (Active Blind Spot Assist)) via the dynamics CAN:
- Long range radar radar data
- Diagnostic data from long range radar
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Sensor CAN
The video and radar sensor system control unit reads in signals from the following assembly parts via the sensor-CAN:
- Left front bumper DISTRONIC (DTR) sensor (B29/2) (for CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS) or CODE 237 (Active Blind Spot Assist))
- Right front bumper DISTRONIC (DTR) sensor (B29/3) (for CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS) or CODE 237 (Active Blind Spot Assist))
- Left rear bumper radar sensor (B29/6) (for code 237 (Active Blind Spot Assist))
- Right rear bumper radar sensor (B29/7) (for code 237 (Active Blind Spot Assist))
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors are evaluated by the integrated microprocessors and the relevant assembly parts are then actuated.
Controlling functions
The video and radar sensor system control unit controls the following functions:
- Variable Speed Limiter function (Speedtronic) (without code 494 (USA version))
- Permanent Speed Limiter (e.g. for winter tire operation)
- DISTRONIC PLUS (with CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS))
- Automatic switch on and off of the short range radar sensor system (vehicles up to 28.02.2013 with a Western Europe design)
- Active Blind Spot Assist (with CODE 237 (Active Blind Spot Assist))
- Active Lane Keeping Assist (with CODE 238 (Active Lane Keeping Assist))
Output of signals
The signals are issued over the following connections:
- Chassis CAN (up to 28.02.2013) or chassis CAN 1 (as of 01.03.2013)
- Vehicle dynamics CAN
- Sensor CAN
Chassis CAN (up to 28.02.2013) or chassis CAN 1 (as of 01.03.2013)
The video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the following signals via the chassis CAN or chassis CAN 1:
- Request "Engage the targeted gear" (downshift or upshift)
- Request to increase/reduce engine torque
- Request: switch short range radar system on/off
- Request to increase/reduce braking torque
- Request to emit warning tones, system or warning messages
For vehicles with code 237 (Active Blind Spot Assist) the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the following signals via the chassis CAN or chassis CAN 1:
- Request for actuation of the left Blind Spot Assist warning lamp (M21/1e2) or the right Blind Spot Assist warning lamp (M21/2e2)
- Request to issue acoustic warnings
- Request to issue system or warning messages
For vehicles with code 238 (Active Blind Spot Assist) the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the following example signals via the chassis CAN or chassis CAN 1:

- Request to issue system or warning messages
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Vehicle dynamics CAN
The video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the following signals via the dynamics CAN:
- Radar requirements of the long range radar (vehicle/operation-specific data
- Diagnosis requests
For vehicles with code 237 (Active Blind Spot Assist) or code 238 (Active Lane Keeping Assist) the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the following signals via the dynamics CAN:
