Common rail diesel injection (CDI), general points

The CDI forms the Engine management "CR61" in the electrical network with the sensors and actuators of Engine 642.8.

The short designation "CR61" stands for:

CR = Common Rail

61 = generation 61

The "common rail" is the line shared by all injectors for fuel delivery. The fuel upstream of the injection is stored in this common line. The entire Engine management is located in the CDI control unit. Sensor data are read in directly by the Engine management and indirectly via the CAN network and the respective actuators are actuated. The individual functions and systems of the Engine management are controlled and coordinated by the CDI control unit.

The Engine management is subdivided into the following systems:

Basic functions

IMPORTANT For diagnostic purposes, the fault codes of the Engine management system can be read out and deleted and individual diagnostic functions can be specifically actuated.

IMPORTANT The vehicle model, national version, exhaust gas variant, transmission version can, for example, be coded with the variant coding.

IMPORTANT The Engine management in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is programmable, i. e. the software of the control unit can be exchanged (replaced). The software required for control unit programming can be found on the diagnosis system software DVD.

IMPORTANT In transport mode various functions of the Engine management are limited. If the kilometer reading of the vehicle is more than 250 km, the system status "Transport mode" is automatically deactivated and can also not be reactivated by means of the diagnostic tester.

IMPORTANT The CDI control unit communicates via the Engine CAN and drive CAN with the powertrain control unit. The powertrain control unit is the interface (gateway) for networking in the vehicle.
