Location
The DISTRONIC Distance-Pilot controller unit is located in the middle in front of the cooler.
Tasks
The Distance Pilot DISTRONIC control unit evaluates the traffic situation in front of the vehicle by evaluating the data of the integrated near-range and long range radar. For model 253.99, the object recognition data from the mono multifunction camera (A40/11) that the Distance Pilot DISTRONIC control unit receives via the suspension FlexRay (Flex E) are also included in the evaluation (data fusion).
The detected data serve to implement the following functions:
- Cruise Control
- Variable speed limiter (except code 494 (USA version))
- Permanent limiter
- Automatic distance control (with code 239 (Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC))
- Lane change (with code 239 (Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC))
- Speed control (with code 239 (Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC))
- Going back into lane/person in front rule (with code 239 (Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC))
- Automatic stopping (with code 239 (Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC))
- Model 253.99: Object recognition taking data from the mono multifunction camera into account
The DISTRONIC Distance-Pilot controller unit compares the permanent target and actual values with each other and evaluates the respective driver requirements. For the implementation of the automatic distance and speed control, the Distance Pilot DISTRONIC control unit transmits corresponding acceleration, deceleration and gearshift requests via the suspension FlexRay after the evaluation of all input factors.
This means that the DISTRONIC Distance-Pilot controller unit has the following tasks:
- Reading in input factors
- Evaluation of input factors
- Transmission of initial parameters
Reading in input factors
The DISTRONIC Distance-Pilot controller unit receives the following input signals via chassis FlexRay, among other things:
- Operating condition for engine/drivetrain
- Driving stage engaged
- Parking brake status
- Engine drive torque
- Brake torque
- Acceleration/yaw rate
- Driver's request via the Cruise Control switch (S163/1s18) or resume Cruise Control switch (S163/1s19)
- Driver request to overtake through setting the turn signal
- Vehicle speed/acceleration
- Steering wheel angle
- Brake pedal position
- Accelerator pedal position
- Model 253.99: Data for object recognition of the mono multifunction camera
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors are evaluated by the microprocessor and the corresponding assembly parts are actuated.
Transmission of initial parameters
The DISTRONIC Distance-Pilot controller unit sends the following initial parameters via the chassis FlexRay, among other things:
- DISTRONIC Distance-Pilot system status
- Object information
- Request to increase/reduce engine torque
- Request for gear change
- Request to increase/reduce braking torque
- Request to emit warning tones, system or warning messages
- Requests to introduce PRE-SAFE® measures (with CODE 299 (PRE-SAFE® system))
Structure
The DISTRONIC Distance-Pilot controller unit contains the following assembly parts:
- Short and long range radar
- Control unit
Properties of the short and long range radar:
- Detection range:
- 40 m for a detection angle of ∠ = 45°
- 160 m for a detection angle of ∠ = 7.5°
- Carrier frequency: 77 GHz (in accordance with the "Pulse Doppler Principle" for independent measurement of distance and speed)
The Distance Pilot DISTRONIC control unit must be readjusted after a replacement (e. g. after accident repair) via the integrated "Service adjustment mode".
