Gasoline injection and ignition system with DI, general
The gasoline injection and ignition system with direct injection in electrical combination with the sensors and actuators of the engine forms the engine management system.
The abbreviated designation "MED 17.7.4" means, for example:
- M = Motronic
- E = Electronic accelerator
- D = Direct injection
- 17.7.4 = Version 17.7.4
The whole engine management is contained in the ME-SFI control unit. The engine management processes the sensor signals and actuates the actuators accordingly. Individual functions of the engine management are controlled and coordinated by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit here.
Variants
- Engine 177 with power stage 1 (LS1) in models 205, 253
- Engine 177 with power stage 2 (LS2) in model 213
Differences between power stage 2 and power stage 1:
- Motor
- CAMTRONIC, cylinder deactivation and four-cylinder operation
- Larger exhaust gas turbocharger with modified exhaust manifolds
- Modified pistons, adapted to a lower compression ratio
- Crankcase, identical design but conversion to chill cast method
- Two-mass flywheel for compensating the vibrations occurring in four-cylinder operation
- Oil pump with increased delivery rate
- Oil separator, adapted to modified installation space
- New design of the engine cover, adapted to the modified overall look and the new engine compartment flow concept
- Fuel injection
- Fuel system high pressure pump with increased delivery rate and modified high-pressure lines (rails)
- Air intake/charging
- Charge-air distributor, adapted to the modified flow pattern
- Air filter, tailored to increased output
- Charge air cooler, rearranged and adapted to increased output
- Cooling circuit
- ME-SFI [ME] control unit, cooled via low-temperature circuit
- Larger volume of coolant expansion reservoir and altered position (on left of cylinder head cover)
The engine management is subdivided into the following systems:
- Basic functions
- Engine management
- Fuel injection system
- Ignition system
- Exhaust system
Basic functions
- Control unit diagnosis
- Fault memory
- European On-Board Diagnosis
- Control module programming
- Transport mode
- Variant coding
- DAS stage 4 (FBS 4)
- Torque coordination
- Heat management
- Alternator interface
- Maximum vehicle speed limit
Control unit programming:
The engine management in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is programmable, i.e. the software of the control unit can be exchanged (replaced) using a vehicle diagnosis system. The software required for control unit programming can be found on the diagnosis system software DVD.
Transport mode:
In transport mode various functions of the engine management are limited.
If the vehicle's kilometer reading is more than 250 km, the "transport mode" system status is deactivated automatically and cannot be reactivated anymore using the vehicle diagnosis system.
Variant coding:
The vehicle model, national version, exhaust variant and transmission version, for example, can be coded with the variant coding.

Engine 177.9 in model 205, 253 with code U78 (AMG sports exhaust system)
In order to optimize the exhaust noise behavior of the exhaust system electrically actuated exhaust gas flaps are installed in the middle element and on the exhaust tailpipes of the rear muffler.
These are actuated by the exhaust gas flap actuator motors at the left, right and center in a load-dependent manner and using a characteristics map for each drive program by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
The ME control unit has its own software for the exhaust gas flap actuators. It facilitates their stepwise opening.
The exhaust gas flap actuator motors are diagnosable.
If one or more exhaust gas flaps cannot be opened, the engine output is reduced.
