Gasoline injection and ignition system with DI, general

In the electrical network with the sensors and actuators of engine 264 DI (Direct Injection), the gasoline injection and ignition system with direct injection forms the engine management system "MED 17.7.7". The abbreviated designation MED 17.7.7 means:

M = Engine

D = Direct injection

17.7.7 = version

The whole engine management is contained in the ME-SFI control unit. Sensor data are read in directly by the engine management and indirectly via the CAN network and the respective actuators are actuated. Here the individual functions and systems of the engine management are controlled and coordinated by the ME-SFI control unit.

The engine management is subdivided into the following systems:

Basic functions

IMPORTANTDiagnosis:

For diagnostic purposes, the fault codes of the engine management system can be read out and deleted and individual diagnostic functions can be specifically actuated.

IMPORTANTCAN network:

The ME-SFI [ME] control unit exchanges data with other control units that are integrated in the CAN network via the connected drive train CAN and engine CAN. The ME-SFI [ME] control unit also acts as an interface (Gateway) between the two CAN bus systems.

IMPORTANTControl unit programming:

The engine management in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is programmable, i. e. the software of the control unit can be exchanged (replaced). The software required for control unit programming can be found on the diagnosis system software DVD.

IMPORTANTTransport mode:

In transport mode various functions of the engine management are limited. If the kilometer reading of the vehicle is more than 250 km, the "Transport mode" system status is deactivated automatically and cannot be reactivated again.

IMPORTANTVariant coding

The vehicle model, national version, exhaust gas variant, transmission version can, for example, be coded with the variant coding.

IMPORTANT Engine 264.9 in model 213, 238, 257 up to model year 2021

with code U21 (AMG Performance exhaust system) Engine 264.9 in model 238

as of model year 2020 up to model year 2021 with code 598 (Gasoline particulate filter (OPF) with sensor system) Engine 264.9 in model 238 as of model year 2020 up to model year 2021 with code 961 (Exhaust system with OPF, generation 2.0)

Exhaust flap

A movable exhaust gas flap is located in the tailpipe of the left rear muffler. The exhaust system's noise behavior is changed by releasing or constricting the tailpipe orifice area.

For model 238 with gasoline particulate filter, the efficiency of the exhaust gas cleaning is improved.

The exhaust gas flap is moved by the left exhaust flap actuator motor. The left exhaust gas flap actuator motor is actuated by the powertrain control unit.
