Gasoline injection and ignition system with DI, general points

The gasoline injection and ignition system with direct injection forms the engine management "MED 17.7.4" in an electrical network with the sensors and actuators of engine 176/177 DI (Direct Injection). The short designation MED 17.7.4 means:

M = Motronic

E = E  lectronic accelerator

D = D  irect injection

17.7.4  = Version 17.7.4

The whole engine management is contained in the ME-SFI control unit. Sensor data are read in directly by the engine management and indirectly via the CAN network and the respective actuators are actuated. Here the individual functions and systems of the engine management are controlled and coordinated by the ME-SFI control unit.

The following table provides an overview of the vehicle model and major assembly overviews:

The operating conditions of the engine and the associated active functions of the engine management are described in the following documents.

With variant coding the following vehicle versions and equipment can, for example, be coded using XENTRY Diagnostics:

The engine management is subdivided into the following systems:

Basic functions

IMPORTANT Diagnosis

For diagnostic purposes, the fault codes of the engine management system can be read out and deleted using XENTRY Diagnostics, and individual diagnostic functions can be specifically actuated.

IMPORTANT CAN network

The ME-SFI control unit is networked via the drive CAN and engine CAN with the vehicle electronics.

IMPORTANT Control module programming

The engine management in the ME-SFI control unit is flashable, that is the complete software in the control unit can be replaced using the Xentry diagnosis (replaced). The software required for control unit programming can be found on the diagnosis system software DVD.

IMPORTANT Transport mode

In transport mode various functions of the engine management are limited. If the kilometer reading on the vehicle is more than 250 km, the system condition "vehicle transport mode" is deactivated automatically and also can no longer be reactivated by XENTRY Diagnostics.

IMPORTANT Variant coding

Using variant coding, the following vehicle versions and equipment, for example, can be coded using XENTRY Diagnostics:

Engine system

Fuel injection system

Ignition system

Exhaust system
