General
The system can detect irreversible cell overheating in a lithium-ion battery while driving or during an active charging process. The aim here is to keep any risk to the safety of the vehicle occupants and, where applicable, the immediate surroundings to an absolute minimum in the event of a battery thermal event.
An appropriate timely warning message shown on the instrument cluster enables the vehicle to be brought to a safe standstill whereupon all the vehicle occupants can then exit the vehicle.
Additional supporting measures and functions (e.g. closing of air recirculation flap, closing of windows and sunroof) can be automatically actuated.
Function requirements
- Drivetrain operational
- "Charging" vehicle status
- Battery management system in wake-up condition
Function
Detection of a battery thermal event
The battery management system control unit monitors the cell voltage and insulation value of the lithium-ion battery in HV battery systems using the battery sensor system.
If the cell voltage and the insulation value drop below a certain value, the system detects a battery thermal event.
Request for warning message in instrument cluster/driver display
A warning message request is sent to the instrument cluster via the CAN for energy management in the event of a warning stage 2 battery thermal event.
A warning message then appears in the driver display of the instrument cluster.
Additional support measures and functions
Depending on the warning level, further measures and functions can be actuated to match the model or equipment installed:
- Closing of air recirculation flaps
- Closing of side windows and sliding sunroof
- Unlocking of locked vehicle from inside
- Unlocking of charging cable
