General
The surround monitoring system scans the area around the vehicle with the aid of distance sensors in the front and rear bumpers.
Surround monitoring is switched on automatically with "Ignition ON". It can be switched off and on manually.
Illustration of the principle for surround monitoring
Function requirements
- Circuit 15 ON
- Vehicle speed 0 to 18 km/h or 16 to 0 km/h (calculated using wheel speed)
- Backward movement of vehicle (defined via the wheel rotation direction) (surround monitoring while reversing).
- Distance of half the vehicle length (defined by the wheel rotation direction) (passive sideguard surround monitoring).
- No trailer detected (vehicles with trailer hitch) (surround monitoring while reversing)
Function
Surround monitoring is based on the ultrasound measurement method. The distance sensors transmit ultrasonic waves. The ultrasonic waves reflected by an obstacle are received again by the distance sensors.
When reversing, the areas in front of and behind the vehicle are monitored. During forward travel, the area in front of the vehicle is monitored. Obstacles to the side are detected as the vehicle passes, if they were previously detected by the side sensors in the front and rear bumpers. Surround monitoring is in measuring mode at speeds below 10 km/h. When objects are detected, the driver is warned by the illumination of the respective warning segments in the central display and, at close range, by a warning tone. For side indication, the vehicle must cover at least the distance of half of the vehicle length. The side warning is only issued if the steering movement is toward the obstacle. When the speed exceeds the limit speed of 12 km/h, the surround monitoring system switches back to standby mode.
If a trailer is detected (vehicles with trailer hitch) (electrical connection established between the vehicle and a trailer), the surround monitoring system is deactivated at the rear.
Functional restrictions
The surround monitoring system does not recognize the following obstacles:
- Obstacles below the detection range, e.g. animals or objects.
- Obstacles above the detection range, e.g. protruding load, overhangs or loading ramps of trucks.
