Multi-Application Addendum: Notes

The reason this section has been added to RP1210C isthat some VDA vendors have implemented different levels of support for "applications" and "clients". If a fleet does not use more than one OEM diagnostic application running at a time, then this does not make a major difference, as most shops only run one diagnostic application at a time. To date, most of the OEM applications only require the SA/MC standard (see below), which is one EXE and a client for each protocol they wish to communicate with. In the past, there has been an application which called LoadLibrary ()  from several processes forcing VDA vendors to implement a re-entrant DLL, which is basically "Multi-Application".

There are three types of RP 1210-compiliant VDA devices on the market, listed below starting at the highest to the least level of functionality. It is expected that in the future, VDA vendors will list their adapters at one of these levels, and OEM applications would list that they required a VDA of "at least XX/YY" functionality.
