Remote Keyless Entry Systems: Description: Notes

WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.

The keyless entry system consists of the following components:

The five-button keypad is located on the outer panel of the driver's door. It is used to input the codes to the keyless entry module. The keyless entry module is located behind the control console, below and to the left of the ABS control module. The module is a microcomputer programmed to control the functions of the keyless entry system. It receives and sends signals between the various sensors and components.

The keyless entry module performs the following functions:

The keyless entry module will also accept and store an owner's personal entry code. This is the only code that will operate the keyless entry system.

The keypad beeper acts as a warning beeper if the 7/8 and 9/0 keypad buttons are pressed simultaneously while the key is in the ignition. Alerts the operator of the five-second time limit in programming a personal code number once the permanent entry code number is entered. The timer module is located behind the left outer kick panel. The timer module activates the interior lamps once a door is opened.

The center black diode strip is on the diode junction box located behind the instrument cluster. The diode strip limits or directs the current through the various circuits in the keyless entry and other vehicle systems. The right circuit breaker is located behind the left outer kick panel. It is a thermal circuit breaker, breaking the current if the circuit is too hot.
