Test D: Keypad Input Test

  1. Turn key to OFF position. Disconnect the keypad connector located in the driver side door. Measure the resistance between the faulty keypad input wire and the Black ground wire at the connector leading to the keypad. See TESTING KEYPAD INPUT WIRES  and WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Measure the resistance of the faulty keypad input wire between the input wire and the Black ground wire with the button pressed. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms between the keypad input wire and the Black ground wire before the button is depressed, and less than 5 ohms while the button is depressed? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the keypad. See KEYPAD  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check the wire(s) leading to the keypad for obvious signs of short(s) or open(s) before replacing the keypad.

    Wire Color Function
    Gray/Red 1/2 Keypad Input
    Orange Black 3/4 Keypad Input
    Light Green/Red 5/6 Keypad Input
    Green/Black 7/8 Keypad Input
    Brown/Yellow 9/0 Keypad Input
    Black Ground
  2. Turn key to OFF position. Locate and disconnect the keyless entry module 20-pin input connector located behind the left inner kick panel. Disconnect the keypad connector. Measure the resistance of the faulty keypad input wire between the keyless entry module input connector and ground. Measure the resistance of the faulty keypad input wire between the keyless entry module input connector and the keypad harness connector. See TESTING KEYPAD INPUT WIRES  and WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms between the keyless entry module input connector and ground, and less than 5 ohms between the keyless entry module input connector and the keypad harness connector? If yes, go to next step. If no, service wires in question.
  3. Turn key to OFF position. Disconnect the keypad connector. Connect a Digital Volt Ohm Meter (DVOM) between the Pink wire at the keypad harness connector and ground. Connect a jumper wire to the faulty keypad input wire terminal at the keypad harness connector. Measure the voltage on the Pink wire while the input wire is momentarily grounded. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts as the input wire is grounded? If yes, keypad illumination is okay. If no, replace keyless entry module. See KEYLESS ENTRY MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
