Abs Quick Check

QUICK CHECK test is performed with ignition switch in ON position (engine off). Before performing ABS QUICK CHECK, inspect ABS warning light to verify a fault has indeed been detected by ABS control module or system is operating normally. When system is operating normally, anti-lock (ABS) warning light will glow for about 3 seconds when ignition switch is turned to ON position or when engine starts. If ABS warning light stays on for more than 3 seconds after engine starts or glows while vehicle is driven, a malfunction has occurred in ABS.

ABS trouble codes are stored in ABS Electronic Control Module (ECM). Up to 3 codes can be stored in ECM and are kept in memory until erased. ABS trouble codes are retrieved by ABS warning light. ABS trouble codes may indicate different failures. It is recommended that QUICK CHECK procedure be followed in entirety.

ABS trouble codes are retrieved with ignition switch OFF. Ground data link connector pin No. 4 to initiate QUICK CHECK test. Turn ignition switch ON and wait about 3 seconds. ABS trouble codes will begin to flash on anti-lock warning light. The first code will be start code (Code 12) and will repeat 3 times. The next code will be latest ABS trouble code to occur and will repeat 3 times before flashing next code.

After all codes have been retrieved, codes will repeat beginning with start code. If no ABS trouble codes are registered, start code (Code 12) will repeat continuously. After all codes have been retrieved, with ignition switch still ON, disconnect jumper connected between data link connector and ground. Ground pin No. 4 of data link connector 3 times within 10 seconds, leaving it grounded for more than one second each time. See ABS QUICK CHECK CHART for trouble code diagnosis. See Fig 1 .
