Cooling System Flushing

WARNING: Always allow the engine to cool before opening the cooling system. Do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap when the engine is operating or the cooling system is hot. The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
    WARNING: Before servicing a vehicle equipped with a fire suppression system, depower the system by following the procedure in FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM article. Failure to follow the instructions may result in serious personal injury.
  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding .
  2. Remove the coolant thermostat. For additional information, refer to Thermostat .
  3. Install the coolant hose connection without the coolant thermostat.
  4. NOTE: Refer to the cooling system flusher manufacturer's operating instructions for specific vehicle hook-up.
  5. Using an appropriate cooling system flusher, flush the engine and radiator.

    Use Premium Cooling System Flush or equivalent meeting Ford specification. Always flush the cooling system with water thoroughly after using the flush and prior to filling the cooling system. Always fill the cooling system with the same coolant that was present in the system. Do not mix coolant types.

  6. Install the coolant thermostat. For additional information, refer to Thermostat .
  7. Backflush the heater core. For additional information, refer to Heater Core Backflushing .
  8. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding .
  9. WARNING: If the vehicle is equipped with a fire suppression system, repower the system. For important safety warnings and procedures, refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM article. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
  10. If equipped with fire suppression system, repower the system.
