Shorted Windings Test

  1. Disconnect ignition coil wiring. Connect ammeter between coil connector positive terminal and coil positive terminal. Connect a jumper wire between coil negative terminal and engine ground.
  2. Place ignition switch in "RUN" position and note reading on ammeter. Current draw should be about 6.5 volts. If reading is higher, coil windings are shorted. Replace ignition coil.
