Bleeding Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 MINI Cooper, 2003 MINI Cooper, and 2002 MINI Cooper. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use only clean brake fluid. Ensure no dirt or other foreign matter contaminates brake fluid. DO NOT mix different brands of brake fluid, as they may not be compatible. DO NOT spill brake fluid on car, as it will damage paint. If brake fluid contacts paint, immediately flush with water.
NOTE: Brake bleeding sequence is RR, LR, RF and LF.
  1. Connect bleeder unit to reservoir and switch on. See Fig 1. Charging pressure should not exceed 2 bar. To completely flush brake system, connect bleeder hose and collecting container to bleeder valve at rear right wheel/brake. See Fig 2. Open bleeder valve and flush until clear brake fluid emerges without bubbles. Close bleeder valve. Follow same procedure to bleed rear left, front right and front left brakes.
  2. To bleed rear axle brake circuit, follow the description in Diagnosis Information System (DIS) to bleed rear wheel brakes. To bleed front axle brake circuit, connect bleeder hose and collecting container to bleeder valve at front right wheel brake. Open bleeder valve. Fully depress brake pedal at least 12 times. Brake fluid must emerge clear and free of bubbles.
  3. Hold brake pedal in fully depressed position. Close bleeder valve. Release brake pedal. Follow the same procedure for front left wheel brake. Switch off bleeder unit and detach from reservoir tank. Check brake fluid level. Close reservoir tank. Ensure rubber seal in lid is installed correctly. See Fig 3.
