31 90... Troubleshooting - steering acoustics

TROUBLESHOOTING CHART

Phenomenon	Driving maneuver	Reason	Remedy
Clicking/grating from steering column	When stationary without engine running, apply different torques to steering wheel in both directions	Steering column to steering spindle center section connection not tight enough	Replace and tighten down screws Tightening torque, refer to repair instruction
Squeaking/grating	When stationary without engine running, apply different torques to steering wheel in both directions	Steering spindle sleeve incorrectly fitted or insufficiently greased	Check fitting; if necessary, remove and grease (with lubricating spray)
Hydraulic rattling	Drive at approx. 20 to 30 km/h with wheels not entirely turned over cleat	Hydraulic system	Check routing and part status of power steering lines; if necessary, replace HYDRAULIC LINES with current version.
Pump whining	Engine revving when stationary	Transmission of structure-borne noise from power steering pump to pressure lines	Check pressure lines and mounting for current status and correct fitting; modify if necessary.
Whistling	Whistling irrespective of speed with fluid at normal operating temperature when stationary	Sharp-edged restrictor in return	Replace return line.
Rattling	Parking when stationary with service brake pressed to low coefficient of friction	Undamped vibration in steering system	Check holder concept of PRESSURE AND RETURN LINES for current status and correct installation, modify if necessary.
