Steering Column: Disassembly

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 42 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, 2002 BMW M5, 2002 BMW 540i, and 2002 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove steering column. See STEERING COLUMN .
  2. Remove ring antenna. See RING ANTENNA OF ELECTRONIC IMMOBILIZER .
  3. Remove protective paint and unfasten grub screws. Remove ignition starter switch. See Figure.
  4. Lift out snap ring (1) and take off with sleeve (2). See Fig 1.
  5. Lift out and remove steering spindle bearing. Take out bearing inner sleeve. See Figure.
  6. Remove shear-off screws with tool, e.g. chisel. See Fig 2.
  7. Remove lock cylinder. See STEERING WHEEL LOCK CYLINDER .
  8. Remove steering angle sensor (1) from steering spindle. See Figure.
  9. Lift out snap ring (1). Remove end collar (2) and spring (3). Remove steering spindle and pull out steering column tube. See Fig 3.
  10. Knock lower steering spindle bearing out of outer tube.
  11. Unfasten screws. Twist connector to remove from bracket. Remove gearbox motor. See Fig 4.
  12. Remove shaft. See Fig 5.
  13. Disconnect torsion springs (8) from both sides. Slacken nut (1). Remove axial grooved ball bearing (2) and clamping disc (3). Remove retainer (4). See Fig 6.
  14. Press clamping fixture (9) out of adjusting lever (5) with special tool (32 1 200) and insert (32 1 204). Grip drive of special tool with open-end wrench. See Fig 7.
