POWER-ASSISTED STEERING INTERMITTENTLY NOT AVAILABLE AT ENGINE START-UP

SUBJECT
Power-assisted Steering Intermittently Not Available at Engine Start-up
SITUATION
An EPS warning lamp may light up in the instrument cluster intermittently at engine start-up. At the same time, the power-assisted steering is unavailable.
After switching the ignition off and then on again, the steering is available again. No fault codes are stored in the fault code memory of the electric power steering (EPS-I1).
CAUSE
Electric Power Steering (EPS)
CORRECTION
- If there is no fault code memory entry stored in the EPS, the steering was not available at engine start-up, the EPS warning lamp lit up and all the fault code memory entries listed below are stored in the DSC control unit:
0xD35B26 - message error (actual EPS position, ID: AVL_PO_EPS) - timeout
0xD359BF - message error (actual driver steering torque of actuator, ID: AVL_STMOM_DV_ACT) - timeout
0xD355C4 - message error (status of front axle power steering, ID: ST_EST) - timeout
0xD35C0C - message error (actual force of rack and pinion, ID: AVL_FORC_GRD) - timeout
Replace the EPS steering rack.
Replacement of the EPS steering rack is only justified when all the conditions listed above are fulfilled.
- Once the EPS steering rack has been replaced, perform the "EPS start-up" service function. Following the EPS start-up, perform the "limit to limit steering," beginning with the left-end stop from the center position, and forcefully apply pressure at each end stop for at least two seconds.

Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the "Search" button, and then enter the applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.
If a control module was working properly and/or had no related faults stored prior to vehicle programming, and it fails to program correctly or requires initialization, this additional work must be claimed with separate labor operations under the defect code listed above; refer to KSD2.
Other Repairs
If performing other ISTA diagnostics and related test plans results with eligible and covered work, claim this work with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.
