Action Taken

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood and 1990 Cadillac DeVille. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Code E53 is stored as an intermittent code and no lights are illuminated.

Code E53 is set if ECM does not receive distributor reference pulses from HEI for more than .4 second. Since DFI system requires HEI pulses in order to fire the injectors, most occurrences of Code E53 will be accompanied by a stall.

Code E53 can be set by ignition switch contact timing when turning key off. If ignition No. 3 contacts that feed HEI open before ignition No. 1 contacts to ECM, a Code E53 may be set. Code E53 does not turn on any lights or service messages.

NOTE: Test numbers refer to test numbers on diagnostic chart.

Test Number 1)  Jumper wires necessary for this test are contained in Essential Tool (J-35616). Also necessary are 2 patch cords and 2 each of Flexible Connectors (J-35616-28) and (J-35616-29).
