System Tests

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Pontiac Grand Am, 1997 Oldsmobile Achieva, and 1997 Buick Skylark. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: System tests on all models are written specifically for General Motors Tech II scan tool. A generic scan tool may not be capable of performing all necessary test functions.
  1. Turn ignition switch off for 5 seconds. Turn ignition switch to RUN position while observing theft system warning light. Theft system warning light should light. Using scan tool in Serial Data Link (SDL) Monitor Mode, check Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)-to-PCM status. Scan tool should read: VTD MODING = NOT SET, REVERSE ROTATE = INACTIVE and VTD PASSWORD = NOT RECEIVE. Check PCM-to-IPC status. Scan tool should read: VTD ACKNOWLEDGE = NO, VTD TAMPER = INACTIVE and REFERENCE SYNC = NOT SYNC.
  2. Put gearshift in Park (A/T) or depress clutch pedal (M/T). Turn ignition switch to START position. Theft system warning light should remain lit. Using scan tool in SDL Monitor Mode, check IPC-to-PCM status. Scan tool should read: VTD MODING = NOT SET, REVERSE ROTATE = ACTIVE and VTD PASSWORD = NOT RECEIVE. Check PCM-to-IPC status. Scan tool should read: VTD ACKNOWLEDGE = NO, VTD TAMPER = INACTIVE and REFERENCE SYNC = NOT SYNC.
  3. Put gearshift in Park (A/T) or depress clutch pedal (M/T). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Theft system warning light should turn off. Using scan tool in SDL Monitor Mode, check IPC-to-PCM status. Scan tool should read: VTD MODING = SET, REVERSE ROTATE = INACTIVE and VTD PASSWORD = RECEIVE. Check PCM-to-IPC status. Scan tool should read: VTD ACKNOWLEDGE = YES, VTD TAMPER = INACTIVE and REFERENCE SYNC = SYNC.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. No Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART) Link communication should exist. Check for DTCs. See scan tool manufacturer's instructions. If there are any history DTCs, refer to appropriate DTC diagnostic procedure.
