NOTE: This bulletin is being reissued to revise the Procedure and correct a Part Number. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 76-74-01 (Section 7 - Transmission).

VEHICLES AFFECTED

1998 Chevrolet and GMC K models and 1998 Oldsmobile Bravada with NVG 136 and 246 Autotrac Active Transfer Case.

SERVICE INFORMATION

GM of Canada dealers and NAES dealers are not authorized to utilize this service bulletin, but must contact the Technical Assistance Center prior to component replacement.

To provide product feedback, a parts restriction program is being implemented for the 1998 NVG 136 and NVG 246 Auto Four Wheel Drive Transfer Case, motor encoder and module assemblies. This program will end July 31, 1998. The program is not optional. All transfer cases, motor encoders and modules requiring repair must be obtained through the program.

NOTE: Exchanged transfer cases must NOT be disassembled and MUST be returned as a complete unit. Dealerships returning a transfer case, even partially disassembled, will be subject to being billed for the transfer case.

PROCEDURE

  1. Contact your division technical assistance group with details of the concern. Technical assistance will open a case and contact New Venture Gear (NVG) who may then assist in diagnosis. If a part is determined necessary, it will be sent overnight and will be invoiced to dealers via GM Service Parts Operations (GMSPO). Premium shipping costs will be paid by GMSPO. Replacement transfer cases will be shipped filled with fluid but, fluid level should be checked prior to operation.
  2. When the exchanged part is received, the replacement unit MUST be received at the GM Warranty Parts Center within 28 days after receipt of the WPC "Request For Part" to avoid a charge back.
  3. Replacement transfer cases must be returned complete as removed from the vehicle. It must NOT be disassembled at any time before return. Dealerships returning units even partially disassembled will be subject to billing for the transfer case.

PREPARATION FOR SHIPPING

  1. Drain all oil from the transfer case.
  2. Remove all plastic shipping plugs and covers from the replacement transfer case and install them on the replaced transfer case.
  3. Place a copy of the repair order and the WPC request in the plastic bag and attach the bag to the complaint transfer case. DO NOT ship any part before receipt of the WPC request for part.
  4. Pack the replaced transfer case into the original shipping container and return to the following address.

NOTE: Refer to Warranty Administration Bulletin 40-05-01B, dated September 1997, for shipping instructions.

This transfer case uses Automatic Transmission Fluid Dexron (Part Number 12346143). DO NOT substitute any other fluid.

Motor Encoders and Modules MUST also be returned to the GM Warranty Parts Center.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

All parts obtained through this program will be billed directly to dealers via GMSPO. Dealers should submit a claim including labor, parts and 40% parts handling allowance.
