BCM Diagnostic System Check: Testing

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with BCM. If scan tool communicates with BCM, go to step  15 . If scan tool does not communicate with BCM, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with other systems connected to same serial data line (PCM, IPC, EBTCM). If scan tool communicates with other systems, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with other systems, go to step  9 .
  3. Check ABS-BCM fuse (10-amp) located in fuse block. If fuse is blown, go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to step  5 .
  4. Replace ABS-BCM fuse. Turn ignition switch to LOCK then RUN position. Recheck ABS-BCM fuse. If fuse is blown, go to step  10 . If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect BCM connector C3. Connect test light between ground and BCM connector C3 terminal "B" (Orange wire). See Figure . If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, go to step  11 .
  6. Connect test light between BCM connector C3 terminals "B" (Orange wire) and "D" (Black wire). If test light comes on all circuits, go to next step. If test light does not come on all circuit, go to step  12 .
  7. Disconnect BCM connector C2. Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Using DVOM, measure resistance between BCM connector C2 terminal B5 and DLC terminal No. 2 (Light Green wire). If reading is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If reading is greater than 2 ohms, go to step  13 .
  8. Connect all disconnected components and connectors. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with BCM. If scan tool communicates with BCM, go to step  15 . If scan tool does not communicate with BCM, go to step  14 .
  9. Scan tool is unable to communicate with vehicle because of class 2 serial data line malfunction. Repair as necessary. Go to DATA LINK CONNECTOR (DLC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  . After repairs, go to step  1 .
  10. Repair short to ground in Orange wire between BCM and fuse block. After repairs, go to step  1 .
  11. Repair poor connection or open in Orange wire between BCM and fuse block. After repairs, go to step  1 .
  12. Repair poor connection or open in Black wire between BCM and ground. After repairs, go to step  1 .
  13. Repair poor connection or open in Light Green wire between BCM, splice pack and DLC. After repairs, go to step  1 .
  14. Replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Perform BCM setup. See NEW BCM SETUP  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing BCM, go to step  1 .
  15. Using scan tool, select BCM DTCs. If any BCM related DTCs are set as current, go to next step. If no BCM related DTCs are set as current, go to step  19 .
  16. Note current BCM DTCs. Check for history BCM DTCs. If any BCM related DTCs are set as history, go to next step. If no BCM related DTCs are set as history, go to step  18 .
  17. After retrieving all BCM DTCs, perform appropriate test under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS  . See BCM DTC DEFINITIONS  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Begin with current DTC diagnosis and repair. Begin with lowest numbered DTC. After repairs, go to step  1 .
  18. After retrieving all current BCM DTCs, perform appropriate test under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS  . See BCM DTC DEFINITIONS  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Begin with lowest numbered DTC. After repairs, go to step  1 .
  19. Using scan tool, check for history BCM DTCs. If any BCM related DTCs are set as history, go to next step.
  20. After retrieving all history BCM DTCs, perform appropriate test under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS  . See BCM DTC DEFINITIONS  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Begin with lowest numbered DTC. After repairs, go to step  1 .
