Data Link Connector (DLC) Diagnostic System Check: Testing

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If scan tool turns on, go to next step. If scan tool does not turn on, go to SCAN TOOL INOPERATIVE  .
  2. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If communication can be established with PCM, go to next step. If communication cannot be established with PCM, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 SERIAL DATA LINE  , DTC U1000: CLASS 2 SERIAL DATA LINK MALFUNCTION  , DTC U1040: LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH ABS  , DTC U1096: LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH IPC  , DTC U1300: CLASS 2 DATA LINK SHORTED TO GROUND  or DTC U1301: CLASS 2 DATA LINK SHORTED TO VOLTAGE  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
  3. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with Electronic Brake Traction Control Module (EBTCM). If communication can be established with EBTCM, go to next step. If communication cannot be established with EBTCM, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 SERIAL DATA LINE  , DTC U1000: CLASS 2 SERIAL DATA LINK MALFUNCTION  , DTC U1016: LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH PCM  , DTC U1096: LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH IPC  , DTC U1300: CLASS 2 DATA LINK SHORTED TO GROUND  or DTC U1301: CLASS 2 DATA LINK SHORTED TO VOLTAGE  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
  4. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). If communication can be established with IPC, go to next step. If communication cannot be established with IPC, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 SERIAL DATA LINE  , DTC U1000: CLASS 2 SERIAL DATA LINK MALFUNCTION  , DTC U1016: LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH PCM  , DTC U1040: LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH ABS  , DTC U1300: CLASS 2 DATA LINK SHORTED TO GROUND  or DTC U1301: CLASS 2 DATA LINK SHORTED TO VOLTAGE  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
  5. If vehicle is not equipped with automatic A/C-heater system, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with automatic A/C-heater system, use scan tool to attempt to establish communication with automatic A/C-heater control system (HVAC). If communication can be established with HVAC, go to next step. If communication cannot be established with HVAC, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 SERIAL DATA LINE  , DTC U1000: CLASS 2 SERIAL DATA LINK MALFUNCTION  , DTC U1016: LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH PCM  , DTC U1040: LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH ABS  , DTC U1096: LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH IPC  , DTC U1300: CLASS 2 DATA LINK SHORTED TO GROUND  or DTC U1301: CLASS 2 DATA LINK SHORTED TO VOLTAGE  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
  6. Use scan tool to attempt to establish communication with Body Control Module (BCM). If communication can be established with BCM, go to next step. If communication cannot be established with BCM, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 SERIAL DATA LINE  , DTC U1000: CLASS 2 SERIAL DATA LINK MALFUNCTION  , DTC U1016: LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH PCM  , DTC U1040: LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH ABS  , DTC U1096: LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH IPC  , DTC U1300: CLASS 2 DATA LINK SHORTED TO GROUND  or DTC U1301: CLASS 2 DATA LINK SHORTED TO VOLTAGE  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
  7. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with air bag restraint and diagnostic module (UART serial data line). If communication can be established, go to next step. If communication cannot be established, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH UART SERIAL DATA LINE  .
  8. If vehicle is not equipped with CD player, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with CD player, attempt to establish communication with CD player (entertainment and comfort serial data line). If communication can be established with CD player, system is operating properly. If communication cannot be established with CD player, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH ENTERTAINMENT & COMFORT (E & C) SERIAL DATA LINE  .
  9. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with radio (entertainment and comfort serial data line). If communication can be established with radio, system is operating properly. If communication cannot be established with radio, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH ENTERTAINMENT & COMFORT (E & C) SERIAL DATA LINE  .
