Replacing Ignition Keys

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Cadillac Eldorado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: A VATS/PASS-Key(R) interrogator (J-35628-A) and terminal adapters are required for this procedure.

In order to replace lost PASS-Key(R) II ignition keys, determine required mechanical cut and key code to start vehicle from vehicle invoice.

If codes are not available, use these following steps in order to determine code:

  1. Determine mechanical cut from these following sources:
    • Code sticker on ignition lock cylinder.
    • Original key knock outs.
    • If mechanical cut cannot be determined, replace ignition lock cylinder.
  2. Using VATS/PASS-Key(R) interrogator (J-35628-A), determine correct key code using these following steps:
    • Disconnect ignition lock cylinder harness connector.
    • Connect VATS/PASS-Key(R) interrogator (J-35628-A) to harness side of ignition lock cylinder harness connector.
    • Turn on VATS/PASS-Key(R) interrogator (J-35628-A).
    • Place key code switch in number one position.
    • Attempt to start engine with NEW mechanically cut key. If engine starts, key code is one.
    • If engine does not start, turn ignition switch to OFF position.
    • Wait at least 3 minutes.
    • Place VATS/PASS-Key(R) interrogator (J-35628-A) key code switch in next position (2, 3, 4, etc.).
    • Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, correct key code has been obtained. Proceed to next step. If engine does not start, perform previous 3 steps until engine starts.
    • Make a new ignition key using correct key code and mechanical cut.
    • Ensure that new key starts engine.
