DTC B1422: Body Control Module Power Malfunction: Testing

  1. Perform diagnostic system check for system in which customer concern is apparent. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to OFF position. In scan tool BCM INPUT data list, monitor IGN 0, IGN 1 and CRANK parameters. If scan tool displays all inputs INACTIVE, go to next step. If scan tool does not display all inputs INACTIVE, go to  7 .
  3. Turn ignition switch to ACC position. In scan tool BCM INPUT data list, monitor IGN 0, IGN 1 and CRANK parameters. If scan tool displays IGN 0 ACTIVE, go to next step. If scan tool does not display IGN 0 ACTIVE, go to  9 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. In scan tool BCM INPUT data list, monitor IGN 0, IGN 1 and CRANK parameters. If scan tool displays IGN 0 and IGN 1 ACTIVE, go to next step. If scan tool does not display IGN 0 and IGN 1 ACTIVE, go to  9 .
  5. WARNING: Engine may start in this step. Turn engine off immediately after reviewing input data.
  6. Turn ignition switch to CRANK position. In scan tool BCM INPUT data list, monitor IGN 0, IGN 1 and CRANK parameters. If scan tool displays IGN 0, IGN 1 and CRANK ACTIVE, go to next step. If scan tool does not display IGN 0, IGN 1 and CRANK ACTIVE, go to  9 .
  7. If any inputs were active when not called for in previous steps, go to next step. If no inputs were active when not called for in previous steps, go to step  12 .
  8. Disconnect ignition switch harness connectors. In scan tool BCM INPUT data list, monitor IGN 0, IGN 1 and CRANK parameters. If scan tool displays ACTIVE for any input, go to next step. If scan tool does not display ACTIVE for any input, go to step  10 .
  9. Disconnect BCM harness connectors. BCM is located behind left side of instrument panel, to left of steering column. See Figure . Test for short to voltage in suspect signal input circuit(s) between BCM harness connectors and instrument panel fuse block. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . See Figure . If short to voltage is not found, go to step  12 . If short to voltage is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  15 .
  10. Disconnect ignition switch harness connectors. Install a 3-amp fused jumper wire between suspect signal input circuit(s) and battery voltage. In scan tool BCM INPUT data list, monitor IGN 0, IGN 1 and CRANK parameters. If scan tool now displays ACTIVE for suspect input(s), go to next step. If scan tool does not display ACTIVE for suspect input(s), go to step  11 .
  11. Check for poor connections at ignition switch harness connectors. If poor connections are not found, go to step  13 . If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  15 .
  12. Disconnect BCM harness connectors. BCM is located behind left side of instrument panel, to left of steering column. See Figure . Test for an open or short to ground in suspect signal input circuit(s) between BCM harness connectors and instrument panel fuse block. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . See Figure . If an open or short to ground is not found, go to step next step. If an open or short to ground is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  15 .
  13. Check for poor connections at BCM harness connectors. If poor connections are not found, go to step  14 . If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  15 .
  14. Replace ignition switch. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. After repair, go to step  15 .
  15. Replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Perform new BCM setup. See NEW BODY CONTROL MODULE SETUP  under PROGRAMMING. After programming BCM, go to next step.
  16. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Reinstall all components and connectors. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within CODE ENABLE CRITERIA  conditions. Check DTCs. If DTC B1422 resets, go to step  2 . If DTC does not reset, system is okay.
